
What will I study?
The PE A level encourages a holistic understanding of PE. The qualifications will further develop students’ understanding of how the mind and body works in relation to performance in physical sport whilst also engaging with key issues and themes relating to contemporary global influences on physical education and sport. The course is assessed through externally assessed exams and Internally assessed coursework and practical performance in one sport.
Paper 1. Written examination: 2 hours and 30 minutes
40% of the qualification 140 marks
● Topic 1: Applied anatomy and physiology
● Topic 2: Exercise physiology and applied movement analysis Bio-mechanics is embedded within the content of Topics 1 and 2. Paper 2. Written examination: 2 hours 30% of the qualification 100 marks
● Topic 3: Skill acquisition
● Topic 4: Sport psychology
● Topic 5: Sport and society Practical performance. Internally assessed, externally moderated 15% of the qualification 40 marks
● Skills performed in one physical activity as a player/performer OR
● Skills performed in one physical activity as a coach
Students MUST be taking part in at least one sport In the role of a performer or coach outside of school. The sports that are available for assessment must be from the prescribed list available from the PE dept, the sports available are the same for all courses at all Institutions.
Performance Analysis and Performance Development Programme
Non-examined assessment: internally assessed, externally moderated 15% of the qualification 40 marks ● In the role of player/performer or coach analyse two components of a physical activity (one physiological component and either a tactical or technical component).
● In the role of player/performer or coach analyse, implement and evaluate a Performance Development Programme.
Where will it lead?
A level PE is an excellent route to further education to study Sports, Science or Social Science courses. A level PE can be a basis for pursuing careers in teaching, medical and psychological fields in addition to roles in coaching and the leisure industry.
