What will I study?
BTEC Computing allows students to explore different aspects of computer technology, develop their mathematical skills and develop the ability to articulate the processes involved in computing systems, including security and encryption methodologies. This course is designed to allow progression from GCSE Computer Science and allows students to develop an understanding of and ability to apply the fundamental principles and concepts of Computer Science, including abstraction, decomposition, logic, algorithms and data representation.
Throughout the course students will develop the ability to analyse problems in computational terms through practical experience of solving such problems including developing systems to do so.
Students will study:
• Unit 1: Principles of Computer Science. This unit is externally assessed by a 2 hour written exam. This unit covers the principles that underpin all areas of computer science. It will develop learner’s computational-thinking skills and they will apply those skills to solve problems.
• Unit 2: Fundamentals of Computer Systems This unit is externally assessed by a 1 hour 45 minute written exam. In this unit learners study the fundamental principles of how computer systems work, including the role of hardware and software, the way components of a system work together and how data in a system is used.
Unit 7: IT Systems Security and Encryption This unit is assessed by written assignments and covers IT system security threats and the methods used to protect against them. Learners undertake activities to protect IT systems from security threats, including data encryption.
Unit 15: Web Development This unit is assessed by written assignments and and learners will investigate website development principles. They will design and develop a website using scripting languages.
Where will it lead ?
BTEC Computing is a specialised course which is ideal if students are planning on moving onto a Computer Science or Computing-based higher level or degree course. The course is also suitable for students seeking to go into a career in Computing (e.g. software development or programming) or an apprenticeship. BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, recognise that this qualification is fit for purpose with regard to progression towards a professional career in IT or towards further education in Information Technology.
