What will I study?
This course is designed for students who are interested in learning about the sector alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily limited to Applied Science. Students will study four units over the two years.
• Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science Structure and bonding leading on to production and uses of substances in relation to their properties. Structure and function of cells and tissues specifically looking at human cells such as muscle and exploring ideas about nerves and synapses. Waves and communication; waves in music, optical fibres in communications and medicine.
•Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques (focuses on the practical use of laboratory equipment and the applications of the various techniques) Concentration of solutions and producing standard solutions, spectroscopy. Calorimeter Chromatography Working in a laboratory, safe working practices and responsibilities and employability skills.
• Unit 3: Scientific Investigations – a strong emphasis on the use of practical skills and students working independently to devise their own investigations based around the topics of enzymes, diffusion of molecules, energy content of fuels, distribution of plants and electrical circuits. Optional Unit – options include physiology of body systems, human regulation and reproduction, disease and infection, astronomy and space. Students will all complete a common optional unit.
