This week the Year 10 GCSE RS students have been looking at the Islamic practice of Hajj (pilgrimage). It is a very ritualised week long journey to Makkah (Mecca) that every Muslim should aim to complete at least once in their life; the purpose is to visit the city at the heart of the religion, to remember key events in the life of the prophet Ibrahim and is an opportunity for the whole Muslim community (ummah) to join together in worship.
As a school trip to Makkah is impossible due to only Muslims being allowed to enter the city, our Year 10 students have used the Hajj model set to engage in a practical demonstration of the events during the pilgrimage. It has been a great way for them to learn the processes and symbolism, they were expected to narrate as they were laying out the pieces to reinforce their own understanding and teach other members of the class.
